Candlemas, one of the most ancient feasts in the Christian church, is known as 'the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord', celebrated annually on February 2, which is this coming Friday.  Mary presented the baby Jesus to God at the Temple in Jerusalem (which is depicted in this 16th-century work of art).

According to Luke 2:32, at this time, a Jewish man, Simeon, held the baby in his arms and said he would be a light for the Gentiles.  It is the reason why this event is called Candlemas.  Happy Candlemas Day!

*  This year, on Sunday, February 4, in our Candlemas celebrations, a dramatic story will be recounted during the homily at the 11 a.m. worship.  You are invited to bring a pillar candle from home to be blessed at the altar during the worship, and then taken back to your home for use during the rest of the season of Epiphany.

*  Next Sunday, also, the 6:30 p.m. service will be a Healing Service (using the Wee Worship Book).

*  The PWRDF Luncheon is set for February 18 after the 11 a.m. service.  Archdeacon Charlene Taylor will be our guest speaker; she will be telling us about her trip to Ghana.  Macaroni and cheese, Caesar salad, rolls, ice cream/cookies are on the menu for $9 per adult and $20 per family which will be in support of PWRDF outreach ministries.  (A gluten-free option will be available.)  The PWRDF team will be calling people to pre-book tickets, or you can call Fronie Squibb at 769-8430.)

*  Sidespersons please take note that your AGM will be held on Sunday, February 4, following the 6:30 p.m. service.  If you are reading this, and at present you are not a sidesperson, maybe you would like to be part of this important ministry.  Just call Stewart at 368-3524 to put your name on the list, or just to learn more about this ministry.

*  Date change!! The Parish Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday, April 8, at 2 p.m.  On that note, please remember that reports have to be submitted to the office by this evening, January 31, 2018.

*  Most of you are aware of the Diocesan initiative on exploring the viability and vitality of our parishes.  The Commission on Parish Vitality has asked each parish to conduct a Bible Study.  The dates for our Study are February 14, following the 9:30 a.m. Ash Wednesday service or February 25, following the 6:30 p.m. service.  In that connection, town hall meetings will be scheduled later.  All are welcome!

*  Please take note that there will be no Godly Play on February 4!  However, children are asked to attend the Candlemas service with their families.

*  Shrove Tuesday is February 13, and as usual, the Men's Service Club will be serving a meal of beans, bologna, bread rolls, with pancakes for dessert.  Instead of cooking at home, why not enjoy supper in the company of your Parish family, for just $10 per adult and children can eat for free.  One sitting at 6 p.m.!! If this is for you, purchase or book your ticket by Sunday, February 11.  You can call Ray at 368-6536 or any Club member.

*  Following the Pancake Supper, you can enjoy a card game for just $6 per person - pay when you arrive and as usual bring your own cards and baskets.

*  This Lent our Archdeaconry will be involved in a campaign to support the work of Home Again Furniture Bank.  In preparation for this Campaign, a youth day is being held on Saturday, February 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at our church.  All young people are invited to attend for five hours or drop by for as many hours as you can spare.  You will hear all about the work of Home Again and learn how to become involved in helping Home Again help others.  For questions concerning this event, please contact Rev'd Canon Amanda Taylor at revamandataylor@gmail.com.  Come and see!!

*  Please mark your calendars for the Pastoral Care Workshop which will be held on Saturday, February 10 from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Ascension auditorium.  There are two presenters:  Adam O'Rourke who will talk about how to communicate, interact, and respond to individuals with dementia, and Violet Reulokke who will share her personal story from her book, "This is called Love:  Dementia when it Becomes an Intruder.'  Admission is a non-perishable food item.  If you plan to attend please call the church office (368-5693), or contact Rev'd Lynn at lcourage@parishoftheascension.ca. The ACW will be serving a soup/sandwich lunch.

Captains, please remind your teams:  Sidespersons' Team # 4 and Counting Team # 1.
